Judging Criteria
As a judge, you must evaluate this individual’s presentation in three areas:
- Understanding – Did you clearly understand what their project is about? Did you learn something?
- Impact – Did you clearly understand the context of their research and why it is important?
- Engagement – How well did the presenter engage you, the audience? Is the presenter coherent? Did they inspire you or excite you?
Judging should focus on the quality of the presentation itself. You are evaluating the person’s presentation, not their research in general! Be mindful of this when awarding scores.
Only comments are returned to presenters – numerical scores are not returned and are used only for awarding prizes. We expect you to select scores as accurately and fairly as possible. Please do not inflate or deflate scores. Do not be afraid to award especially high or low scores (if they are accurate) as this will improve the accuracy of our algorithm. Again, only your comments are returned to presenters.
No presentation style or medium is inherently better than another – please do not evaluate the choice of medium. Instead, evaluate each presenter’s ability to use that medium to meet the three criteria above. Feel free to make comments about these on the feedback form, however.
There will be audience awards for “Best poster” and for ScAPE.
Judging Instruction
1. Judges have received an email with a Google Drive link for all judging materials and judging assignments.
2. We need registered judges to judge 5 students per session! You may judge as many presenters as you like beyond the initial 5.
2. Visit the assigned presenter’s booth and listen to their presentation. Feel free to ask questions / discuss with the presenter!
3. Complete the Google Form Score Sheet for that presenter. A rating of 1-10 will be assigned for each category (Understanding, Impact and Engagement). Additional comments are welcome! Please don’t fill out the sheet while you are at the student’s booth.
4. Submit the form and judge the next presenter!
